Stop The HIT Coalition Ramps Up Grassroots and Paid Media Efforts Ahead of Key HIT Repeal Vote in Congress

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C.– In advance of House action to repeal the Health Insurance Tax (HIT), the Stop The HIT Coalitionhas launched a grassroots and paid media campaign to continue to raise awareness about the immediate need for HIT relief. While Congress passed bipartisan legislation to provide a one-year suspension of the HIT for 2019, the subsequent return of the tax places a burden on the nation’s 29 million small business owners, their employees, and the self-employed – individuals forced to pay the greatest percentage of the tax.

Legislation to repeal or suspend the HIT has been introduced on a bipartisan basis since 2013 in both the House and Senate. Further, since 2015 Congress passed multiple suspensions of the HIT for benefit years 2017 and 2019. Building on this progress, Congress must focus on ways to provide small businesses with much-needed certainty for 2020 and beyond.

Over the next several weeks, Coalition members and small business owners across the country will be engaging with Members of Congress about the cost impact of the HIT. In addition, Stop The HIT will launch a targeted Beltway and in-district advertising campaign calling on Washington to stop the egregious tax on small businesses.

“Year-over-year uncertainty from the HIT undermines the promises that Washington has made to the small business community,” noted Elena Tompkins, executive director of the Stop The HIT Coalition. “By repealing the HIT once and for all, leaders in Congress can help protect small businesses from greater instability, uncertainty and higher costs as premiums are already being considered for 2020.”
